Oil of Vitriol is another name for Spirit of Vitriol, Vitriol, Sulphuric Acid or Fuming Sulphuric Acid. The chemical name of Oil of Vitriol is H2SO4 and the name 'vitriol' is derived from the Latin word for 'glass' (vitreus). This was because of the 'glassy' appearance of the hydrated Sulphate salts in the original manucature of Oil of Vitriol.
Oil of Vitriol is classified as Corrosive at or above 15% and the labelling symbol is 'C' for 'Corrosive'. The Risk Phrase that applies to Oil of Vitriol is 'R35 causes severe burns'. The Safety Phrases that apply to Oil of Vitirol are 'S26 in case of contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice'; 'S30 never add water to this product' and 'S45 in case of accident or if you feel unwell seek medical advice immediately and show label where possible'.
