When choosing the most appropriate Sulphuric Acid packaging, it is vital that the container and packaging material is compatible with the substance contained therein.  All packaging for any hazardous substance, not just Sulphuric Acid packaging, must be suitable to contain that substance in a safe manner.

Appropriate ‘inner’ materials for Sulphuric Acid packaging can include glass, plastic and metal, whereas appropriate ‘outer’ Sulphuric Acid packaging materials may include wood, fibreboard, plastic and metal.

UN-approved packaging is coded according to a coding system, in addition to being identified by the UN symbol.  There must also be reference on the packaging material to:-

  • Date of manufacture
  • Country of manufacture
  • Specific gravity of the substance contained
  • Type of packaging used
  • Suitability for different packing groups

Packaging can basically be divided into two groups, ‘stand-alone’ and ‘composite’.  Where ‘stand-alone’ packaging is used, no further packaging is required for transport purposes providing the goods are stowed and transported in a safe manner without loss of contents or undue movement during transportation.  When ‘composite’ packaging is used, this means that an inner container holds the substance whilst an outer container holds both substance and inner container.  An example of 'composite' packaging might be a glass or plastic bottle contained in a fibreboard case.  The outer packaging will be designed to hold one or multiple ‘inners’.

Although environmental and economical good sense would suggest that Sulphuric Acid packaging should be re-used where possible, it is vital that damaged packaging is never re-used.  Where packaging is damaged or broken, it must not be re-used in this way but must be replaced, recycled or destroyed.

All closures must be compatible with the product contained therein and must guarantee a water-tight seal to avoid leakage.  Containers should ideally be fastened to a specific torque setting.

Outer fibreboard Sulphuric Acid packaging should be sealed with an appropriate tape, usually 50 mm wide and ideally strengthened.  The adhesion needs to be strong enough to ensure that there are good seals along all joins of the carton.
